Questions About a Juvenile Case?

Call the Juvenile Clerk of Courts or Juvenile Probation. Juvenile cases are decided by the court with Juvenile Probation, not through adult bail. Please do not send a minor's personal or case information through any website form.

How Juvenile Court Works

Delinquency cases involve a young person accused of an offense. Dependency cases involve children who may need protection or care. Both are handled by the juvenile division of the Court of Common Pleas.

Juvenile court focuses on supervision, services and accountability rather than adult punishment. Parents or guardians are expected to take part, and the young person has the right to a lawyer.

Location & Contacts

County materials describe the Port Indian Road campus as Norristown or Eagleville; both use ZIP 19403. Juvenile Probation is at 530 Port Indian Road; the court and Juvenile Clerk are at 540.

Understanding Juvenile Proceedings

  1. 1Intake: most young people enter through an intake conference with a parent or guardian at Juvenile Probation.
  2. 2Referral and petition: the case may be diverted, handled informally or filed as a petition with the court.
  3. 3Detention hearing: if a youth is held, the court reviews detention promptly.
  4. 4Adjudication: the judge decides whether the facts are proven.
  5. 5Disposition: the court sets a plan, such as probation, services or placement.
  6. 6Supervision: Juvenile Probation monitors the plan and reports to the court.

Juvenile Cases Are Not Adult Bail Cases

Adult bail-bond procedures do not apply to juvenile delinquency cases. Whether a young person is detained or released is decided by the juvenile court with Juvenile Probation. If a youth is charged as an adult, an attorney can explain how that changes the process.

Youth Center Versus Juvenile Court

The Montgomery County Youth Center is the county's shelter and secure detention facility for juveniles. It shares the Port Indian Road campus with the juvenile court, but it is a separate operation from the court itself.

Guidance for Parents & Guardians

  • Ask the Juvenile Clerk of Courts or the assigned probation officer for hearing information.
  • Arrive early, bring photo ID and any court notices, and plan for security screening.
  • The young person has the right to a lawyer; the Public Defender's Office can help if the family cannot afford one.
  • To get a copy of a juvenile file, call the Juvenile Clerk first; photo ID is required.
  • Juvenile records are generally not public. Expungement questions go to Juvenile Probation or a lawyer.
