Montgomery County Juvenile Court

Juvenile delinquency and dependency cases follow their own procedures and are not handled like adult criminal cases. Hearings take place at a separate location from the main courthouse.

Preliminary Arraignments & Hearings

  • Step 1

    Preliminary Arraignment

After an adult arrest, the first appearance is usually before a magisterial district judge, sometimes by video. The charges are read and bail is typically set.

  • Step 2

    Preliminary Hearing

Held at the district court. The judge decides whether there is enough evidence to send the case on to the Court of Common Pleas.

  • Step 3

    Common Pleas

Cases held for court move to the Norristown courthouse for formal arraignment, pretrial matters, trial and sentencing.

Bail Decisions & Subsequent Proceedings

Bail is a judicial decision. The amount and any conditions depend on the charges, the person's history and the facts of the case. A district judge usually sets it first; the Court of Common Pleas can review or change it later.

Cash bail can be paid directly to the county at the Clerk of Courts on weekdays, or at the correctional facility after hours when the person is held there. A commercial bail bond is a separate, private arrangement.

Court Dockets & Case Information

Pennsylvania's Unified Judicial System portal lets anyone search public district court and Common Pleas dockets by name or docket number. A docket shows the case and its hearings; it does not prove that someone is currently in jail.

  • District court dockets begin with MJ; Common Pleas criminal dockets begin with CP-46-CR.
  • Hearing dates can change. Confirm with the court office listed on the docket.
  • Sealed, juvenile and other restricted records are not available through public search.
