Looking for a Philadelphia Court or Case?
This directory is information only. Start with the docket on the state court portal, which names the court handling a case, or call the FJD's general information line. For an adult case where bail has been set, the Stout Center guide and the Philadelphia County hub have our bail-help form; you can also call Center City Bail Bonds at (215) 870-8197.
The First Judicial District
The FJD is made up of two courts that form the Philadelphia County court system: the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court. Criminal cases begin in Municipal Court.
The FJD says all court offices are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, unless stated otherwise. The Municipal Court Preliminary Arraignment Courtroom is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the Traffic Division is open 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays.
Municipal Court
Criminal, Civil & Traffic
Criminal Division: preliminary arraignments, misdemeanor trials and felony preliminary hearings. Civil Division: small claims, landlord-tenant and code enforcement. Traffic Division: traffic citations.
Court of Common Pleas
Trial, Family & Orphans'
Trial Division (civil and criminal, including felony trials and Municipal Court appeals), Family Division (domestic relations and the Juvenile Branch) and Orphans' Court.
One Building, Many Divisions
Buildings vs. Courts
A division is not the same as a building. One building can host several divisions, and some Municipal Court criminal courtrooms are in police districts.

Bail Acceptance and Payment Guidance
The FJD says cash bail can be posted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, at the Stout Center's basement-level Payment Center (215-683-7726 / 7727). Eligible Municipal Court bail can be paid online through PAePay Bail.
The other court locations in this directory are not listed as adult criminal bail-payment sites.
Older court publications name different rooms: the Municipal Court Citizens' Guide (PDF dated 2009) says Room B-01, and a Pretrial Services FAQ (PDF dated 2004) says Room B-03. The FJD's current FAQ says only "Basement Level in the Payment Center." The current window has not been confirmed, so call Bail Acceptance at 215-683-7727 before you travel. The preliminary arraignment courtroom is not a bail payment window, and not every bond type is processed at one counter.
