Montgomery County Jails & Detention Centers
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania | Adult, Juvenile & Court Holding
Montgomery County has three distinct custody locations: the adult Correctional Facility in Eagleville, the Youth Center in Norristown for juveniles, and a temporary holding area inside the county courthouse.
Each one serves a different purpose and follows different rules. This guide explains which is which, how to confirm where someone is held, and how bail and release work for adult cases.

How Custody Works in Montgomery County
After an adult arrest in Montgomery County, a person is usually taken before a magisterial district judge for a preliminary arraignment, where bail is typically set. If the person is not released, they are held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville.
On court days, the Sheriff's Transportation & Detention Division moves people by bus between the Correctional Facility and the courthouse in Norristown, where they wait in the courthouse detention center until their hearing. Juveniles are handled separately through the Juvenile Probation Department and the Youth Center.

Temporary Courthouse Holding Center
Montgomery County Courthouse Detention Center
Sheriff's Office: same-day court holding
A 16-cell holding area on the Plaza level of the courthouse for people awaiting court hearings. It is a temporary holding location run by the Sheriff's Transportation & Detention Division, not a separate public jail.
2 E. Airy Street (Plaza level), Norristown, PA 19401
Adult Booking and Custody Verification
The county does not publish a searchable online jail roster. To confirm whether an adult is at the Correctional Facility, call the facility directly with the person's full legal name and date of birth.
- 1Call the Correctional Facility at 610-635-7100 with the person's full legal name and date of birth.
- 2Check Pennsylvania's UJS court portal to find the docket and the court handling the case. A docket does not confirm current custody.
- 3If the person may be serving a state sentence, use the Pennsylvania DOC locator. It does not include county jail inmates.
- 4If federal custody is possible, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator.
Understanding Temporary Court Holding
The Montgomery County Courthouse Detention Center is a temporary holding location, not a separate conventional public jail. The county describes a 16-cell area on the courthouse Plaza level that can hold up to 100 people awaiting court hearings.
People are brought there from the Correctional Facility for the day and returned afterward unless the court orders release. It is not a booking jail and does not take public visits or bail payments.
Juvenile Detention vs. Adult Incarceration
Youth Center
Juvenile Detention
- Ages 10 to 18
- Admission approved by Juvenile Probation
- Detention hearing normally within 72 hours
- Juvenile court decides custody
- Visits by parents and guardians (secure detention)
Correctional Facility
Adult Custody
- Adults awaiting trial or serving sentences
- Bail set by a magisterial district judge or the Court of Common Pleas
- Cash bail payable to the Clerk of Courts or after hours at the facility
- Visitors pre-register for a badge
- Release depends on court conditions and holds
Commercial bail bonds are an adult criminal-court process. Juvenile custody decisions are made by the juvenile court, and families should contact the Youth Center or Juvenile Probation directly.
Bail Posting and Release Procedures
The Clerk of Courts accepts bail for criminal cases Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays. If the defendant is held at the Correctional Facility, cash bail can be paid there after hours, on weekends and on holidays. Questions: 610-278-3346.
In-person bail is cash only, requires a valid photo ID, and the person posting must be at least 18. A surety who posts cash is responsible for the full bail amount. Wire transfers can take one to two business days.
Court-ordered cash bail is a payment to the county, not a commercial bail company premium. No commercial estimate is shown while Center City’s Montgomery County authorization and commercial terms remain unconfirmed. Confirm the amount and payment requirements with the Clerk of Courts. Release is not immediate; holds, other cases and facility processing can delay or prevent it.
